Joy of Watercolor: Online Classes
Online classes start every few months.
Have you dipped your toes into watercolor only to be met by frustration?
Do you feel as if your watercolors are muddy and overworked?
In my classes, I will share with you the secrets of:
Working with a successful palette of colors that “play well together”
Using the correct amount of water and pigment to avoid back runs, blossoms, and “splotchy” areas
Selecting and using reference material rather than “copying a photo” for more engaging composition
Harnessing your own flow and intuition to put the “Joy” back into watercolor
More information about both on-line classes and link to registration forms can be found below or click here registration form
Private lessons or Mentoring Sessions

Need a little extra help?
Are you an experienced artist who is struggling with the direction in which your work is moving?
Schedule a private lesson or mentoring session tailored to your needs. (private lessons are $100 for 75 minutes, critique sessions are $60 for one hour).

4-day Joy of Watercolor Plein Air Workshop
July 28th - 31st, 2025
Discover a fresh, loose approach to transparent watercolor. Learn to work with, not against, the medium to create dynamic paintings that seem to paint themselves. Learn how to observe and to simplify in a plein air setting and avoid overworking. Each day there will be demonstrations and exercises to energize and excite — followed by lots of time for painters to create their own work, with the enthusiastic hands-on instruction that Marilyn’s students have come to expect.
3- meals a day and lodging in the beautiful Landgrove Inn…. Plenty nearby for your non-painter companion.
Winter 2025: online classes via Zoom
Cost is $500 for 10, 2-hr sessions. Current students have priority registration.
Students will have access to the recorded class if they miss a class!
Session times:
Tuesdays January 7, 14, 21, 28; February 4, 11, 18, 25; March 4, 11
SECTION 1: Tuesday morning 9:30-11:30 Eastern Time
SECTION 2: Tuesday afternoon 1-3 Eastern Time
Thursdays January 9, 16, 23, 30; February 6, 13, 20, 27; March 6, 13
SECTION 3: Thursday afternoon 1-3 Eastern Time
Class size is limited for maximum participation.
When you register for the class (payment is accepted via check, venmo, online payment, etc.) you will receive instructions on how to join the class via ZOOM on any tablet, smartphone or computer. Classes are two hours long and are interactive.
Each class consists of a short lecture/demo on a topic where I demo techniques or principles and answers questions.
Topics have been “everything you need to know about water,” "brushes and mark-making,” “how to begin, ” etc., followed by a “live” demonstration of a full painting. This is not a “paint-along” class, but rather provides the students with an insight into my approach, allowing them to apply it to their own paintings and subject matter.
The class ends with a critique session where students can discuss either a finished painting, a work in progress or an approach to a new painting. Through the magic of photoshop and screen sharing I am able to show and comment on the work as students watch and interact.
Students receive a link to the recorded session for their own private viewing.
