Now offering original watercolors for under $50

I am a firm believer in trying to find homes for my original artwork, rather than making prints or copies of my work. There is something very special to me about having a one-of-a kind piece of art rather than mass-produced copies. I am going to get in trouble with many artist for writing this, but “Giclée” prints are actually the product of expensive ink-jet printers. I understand that some people can’t bear to give up one of their originals, but to me nothing compares to sending a piece of art into the world that has my “fingerprints” on it — that carries a part of me with it.

So today, I am beginning an experiment. I have created an online store on my website, on which I have selected 12 tiny paintings for under $50 each, with the hope of making some of my original art affordable and sending actual paintings (not prints) into the world to find new homes.

When I brainstorm with my students painters about why we make art, lots of different reasons come up. But the most common thread I get is “connection.” I believe that painting is a conversation… or rather many conversations.

The first conversation starts between the artist and their subject matter– that which compells the painter to pick up a brush and capture something (either an image or a feeling or both.) During the process of painting, there is a conversation between the artist and the medium (often the watercolors have a mind of their own) as well as an internal conversation about the progress of the painting. Often inner meanings occur to me, tunes or phrases spontaneously pop into my head. The times I feel most successful in my studio are when I am transported into that process and the conversation becomes so intuitive and internal that it often bypasses my brain.

The last conversation/connection occurs when someone looks at a completed painting and feels it talking to him/her. Sometimes they connect immediately to the same feeling that the artist believed they were putting out there, but other times they make their own connections between the finished work and their own story. There is nothing more exciting to me that to feel that my work has “spoken’ to someone. I love putting my art out into the world to connect with others.

The works in this new “Tiny Landscapes” series are actually intuitive paintings, which I loved creating and which I hope you will carry on conversations in their new homes.

And if any of the other paintings on my website or Instagram feed speak to you, please contact me about pricing.
